Philip and Mary Groat

Philip and Mary Groat

Not too much to post at the moment as there is no detecting allowed due lockdown so here’s another Sandbach find from last year. This is a Philip and Mary groat from between 1554 and 1558. Note the way the coin has been bent. This identifies it as a ‘love token’. This was a way of showing your love to your sweetheart. These would often be left on fenceposts or stiles to be found by your partner.
